THE MAN GOD IS LOOKING FOR - Part I
By Pastor Henry
John 1:6 NIV
There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.

The first characteristic of a person that God is looking for to do great things is a man who is sent from God. In other words, God is looking for those whom He has chosen. God is looking for people whom He can send. I like to use that word “Are we ‘sendable’”? So God is looking for people who are ready, who are equipped, who are willing and who are available to be sent. In this case, of course we know the life of John the Baptist, how he was prepared even in his mother’s womb. The Bible tells us that he was filled with the Holy Spirit the moment he was born and the Bible tells us of God’s destiny in this young life. And he grew up to be what he has been destined to be - to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The current situation in this state - in this nation - concerning alcohol, concerning cigarettes, concerning Ah Longs, and concerning many issues which are related to our daily lives, as well as related to us as a church involved in mission, how we can engage and touch society and bring transformation? God is looking for a person. God is looking for a people, God is looking for a church who would be “sendable”, who would be available, who would be willing to go and do His bidding.
In John chapter 1, verse 6, the Bible says ‘there came a man.’ That means in the history of the nation of Israel there arose a person during that time called John. And this John was not just a man who had a human destiny or an ambition in life. But he was a man who had a divine destiny in his life. The Bible tells us each one of us has been destined by God. I am not talking about theology. I am talking about each one of has been given a destiny, a destiny whether it be a pastor, a teacher, a school teacher, a college lecturer or a doctor or whatever profession you are involved in the marketplace. That is your destiny and in that destiny we need to live up to God’s plan and purpose, that we be available to God, in where we are serving, that we can touch lives. So here in John 1:6 God is looking for a person who is sent by Him. He is still looking for such people. The Bible tells us each one of us has a destiny in God: a destiny to touch lives.
The second characteristic of a man that God is looking for in Luke 3:2 NASU
… the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
|
Why did the word of the Lord come to John in the wilderness? Why not to the governor? Why not to the elders? Why not to all those who were in authority? Aren’t they ordained and chosen of God to run that region and to run that country? Certainly, God would want to speak to them but the Bible tells us that the word of the Lord came to the man in the wilderness. So here is a point to note about location. God’s word transcends places geographically.
He does not just speak to us in the church. He does not just speak to us during the time of prayer or intercession. He speaks to us as long as our hearts and communication lines are open. I cherish this…wherever I may be, God speaks to me. And God can speak to you whether in the desert places; in loneliness; in isolation or in crowds; in the mountains or in the valleys; even in the midst of much trials and conflicts in workplace, God can still speak to each one of us. That is the power of God’s word.
John is not just one who is sent by God, he is also one who hears from God.
When was the last time you heard from God? If you heard from God, what should you do? How have you been involved in the ministry at Grace Assembly? So if you have a calling and God is speaking to you to get involved in certain areas in the church, in touching lives, in cells, in missions or in music, or children church, or in other areas. Volunteer. Stand up and say, “Count me in. I want to serve.” |
