THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST AND THE RENTING OF THE VEST (PART I)
By Pastor Henry
The resurrection of Jesus Christ caused the renting of the vest of the priest, the renting of the veil in the temple, and the renting of the walls of the temple. What do all these mean to us?
Matthew 26:63-65 KJV
63 But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, “I adjure thee by the living God, (Notice how the high priest spoke as a representative of God.) that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.” This is the crux of the issue, not the miracles he did or the teachings that he brought. But when he said he was the Son of God, he made himself equal with God. He claimed he was the Messiah and that was the issue then. It still is the issue now: Is Jesus God?
64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said; nevertheless, I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. “Son of man” here means the perfect man, the sinless man which was the Messiah. Thus, when he claimed to be the Son of man the religious people knew he was claiming to be the Messiah.
65 Then the high priest rent his garments, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
What was happening here? The high priest was standing before Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest. And he was claiming to represent not only the nations but God himself, the high priest of Israel. He was not only the high priest but the counsel of the high priests, the Pharisees, the scribes and the Sadducees. All the religious people were there and Jesus stood before them.
So when Jesus confirmed that he was the Son of God, the high priest tore his clothes. He defrocked himself, meaning he was not allowed to be a priest anymore. His clothes were torn and he was finished. On his clothes he had all the twelve stones that represented the twelve nations of Israel - all the nations of the world. And as the high priest stood before Jesus the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest and rent his garments, he was declaring by this act before someone superior to him that his priesthood was now no more. He was no longer representing the nations. He was no longer representing God.
Why did he do that? Because we notice that in all religious beliefs, the priesthood - the ability to stand before God and man as mediator is usually reserved to a particular family, people or race - special people. Jesus came and put an end to that.
1 Tim 2:5 NKJV
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus…
There is only one mediator between God and man and that is Christ Jesus who gave himself as the living eternal sacrifice so that you can come boldly into God’s presence, having this confidence always that God hears you because of His son, Jesus Christ!
