The Power of FOLLOWSHIP
By Pastor Henry
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed Him. (Mat 4:19-20)
Let me introduce a new word to you - followship. We are all familiar with the word fellowship but followship? Certainly, this word does not even exist in the dictionary, but it deserves to be for the Christian faith is all about following someone - Jesus Christ. So followship is simply the act and the art of following Jesus!
Jesus told Simon and his brother, Andrew, “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mat 4:19) Follow Jesus and He will make you fishers of men. And they left everything and followed Jesus. Peter, Andrew, James, John and later Philip and Matthew - one by one, they followed Jesus. They were all working people they were not from the bible college. They didn’t cough in Greek and sneeze in Hebrew. They were fishermen, tax collectors and working men.
If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you will always be fishing men. People will fall into your boats and nets because you are following Jesus. If you are not fruitful in your evangelism and soul-winning, ask yourself, “Am I truly following Jesus?”
People are always talking about leadership. Have you noticed how everyone wants to be a leader? But Jesus spoke about servant-hood. He said that in His kingdom, the one that bends, bows, washes feet and serves is the leader. Now the kingdom of man is different, but in the kingdom of God, the one who serves is the leader. So if you want to be considered a leader in the kingdom of God, serve. Jesus showed us how to serve – and that in the eyes of God, is the true leader. Are you willing to serve?
I want you to know if you are saved and you have faith in your heart, believe that He has called you in the same way that He has called His disciples. Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34) Take up your cross and follow Him. He didn’t say to wear a gold cross and follow Him. He was referring to the crosses in our lives, the real issues in our lives. All of us have crosses to bear, there is always something that hinders - pain, discouragement, hurt, frustration and burden. It’s something like ‘death’ hanging over us, but Jesus said to take up our cross and follow Him. Follow Him and He will make us fishers of men. Follow Him and He will cause us to be fruitful!
To move up into a new era of fruitfulness, we need to truly practice followship. We need to deny ourselves of our comfort zones, take up our cross and follow our Lord Jesus Christ to wherever He leads us to. As He leads us to take hold of our new equipping station, Alpha Omega International, we know He will make us fruitful, we know He will make us “fishers of men”. Why? Because we follow Him.
So let our spiritual eyes be opened to see the boats that are full and the nets overflowing with fish. Let us see the multitudes, hungry for the good news of Jesus Christ, coming into God’s kingdom. Hallelujah! Yes, there is power in followship!
